Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has successfully patented a new turbocharged six-cylinder gasoline engine design with the U.S. Patent Office. Unofficial sources say its output can exceed 500 horsepower (375 kilowatts), and it will ultimately replace the old V8 HEMI.
In terms of its design architecture, the new inline-six mill looks similar to the GME-T4 turbo-four unit also made by FCA, save for the couple extra cylinders. The company does not reveal what stage the development is in and when to expect the new engine to ship.
Rumor has it the boost levels will vary in the 360 – 525 horsepower (268 – 390 kW) range. An electric motor add-on will help eliminate turbo lag.
