General Motors and the Chinese SAIC Group have worked together to create Rong Guang, an ultra-compact pickup truck model that can be as little as 2,450 mm (8 ft.) long.
The car comes in several variants, the smallest of which can fit completely inside the body of a Chevrolet Silverado HD.
The Rong Guang micro-pickup can be powered by an engine either 1.5 or 1.8 liters large. The latter produces over 125 hp (93 kW) and 170 Nm (125 lb·ft) of torque. To compare: the elongated Chevrolet Silverado HD outputs only 365 hp (272 kW), despite its 6.0-liter engine.
The interior of the low-end vehicle greets the observer with cloth upholstery, lots of cheap plastic finish, a simple car stereo and an air conditioner.
The American-Chinese pickup truck is available at U.S. $6,900 in China – a small fraction of that the cheapest Chevrolet Silverado costs. Whether there will be an international release is unknown at the moment.
