We have been talking a lot about motorhomes lately, but this example breaks the mold in more ways than one. Gino Lucci, from the United States, bought a 1943 military transport plane and turned it into a road-worthy campervan suitable for a big family.
The army decommissioned this Douglas R4D back in 1980, and Lucci was able to acquire it in 2019. It took him two years to finish the motorhome conversion. He began by taking out some parts and shipping them to France, where a team of enthusiasts was restoring an identical plane. Left with a stripped plane body, he furnished it with a sleeping area, a living room, a WC, and a fully featured kitchen.
The cockpit became the driver’s cab, and some of the airplane controls are still there and functioning. These include ventilation, air conditioning and internal radio communication.
Carrying the ride are a truck chassis and a powerful diesel engine.
