Mercedes-Benz has once again begun producing body parts for the legendary W198 (300 SL Gullwing) coupe issued in 1955 through 1963. Mercedes-Benz’ first-ever sports vehicle came out in a limited series of just 1,500 copies and may now be purchased at prices reaching as far as €1,900,000.
The company plans to produce metal body panels based on the 3D scans of the original W198 cars. Workers will then use wooden hammers to beat these panels into the desired final shape manually.
Owners of street-legal Mercedes-Benz W194 vehicles will soon be able to buy spare body parts for them at between €2,900 and €15,000. Those who would like to overhaul the interior of their 63-year old ride may do so using the high-quality checkered wool fabric the company also brought back on the market this spring.
The Mercedes-Benz W198 (300 SL Gullwing) coupe vehicle was produced mid-20th century with an original door construction called the gullwing door (hence the name). A roadster model with the removable roof hit the market some time afterwards. Both variants of the car were driven by three-liter gasoline engines rated at 215 hp (160 kW).
