The team of the German
concern participated in the DTM championship since 2000 - since the foundation
of the competition. But the brand management understands that it is worth
keeping up to date with the advanced technologies of the automotive world. And
the future of the automotive industry, whatever one may say, is precisely in
electrification.
It is planned that
Mercedes-Benz will leave DTM's body race next year and from 2019 will begin to
participate in the sixth season of the Formula-E championship, where cars on
electric traction compete.
Toto Wolff, the head of the
motor sport division, expressed the company's position in the following words:
"The years spent in the DTM championship will remain forever in the memory
of all employees of the German Mercedes brand - this is an important chapter in
our history. I want to thank everyone, without exception, who has put his hand
to the success of Mercedes-Benz in this championship. Yes, it's always hard to
leave, but we will do everything possible this and next year to win as many
titles as possible before leaving. We must do this for our fans and for
ourselves".
After the departure of
Mercedes-Benz from the racing series, only two BMW and Audi participants will
remain in the DTM.
