Michelin is developing an innovative solution for the restoration of worn-out tires with the assistance of a 3D printer.
The technology will not only help to regenerate even the most intricate protector patterns, but also to track the current wear-and-tear via a dedicated mobile app. Whenever the tires need fixing, the necessary restoration data gets uploaded to the 3D printer, and all the driver has to do is choose a protector pattern based on the season and personal preference.
According to the Michelin head of research department, the technology is still pretty far from full-scale implementation. However, substantial progress has been made. The main issue is actually the lack of the needed infrastructure – more specifically, car service stations with specialized 3D printers.
Aside from the above, Michelin plans to substitute some of the petroleum-based tire components for their environment-friendly counterparts made out of natural wood.
