The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed two legislation amendments specifically aimed at improving the mobility of people who are otherwise unable or reluctant to drive cars due to health reasons.
The first amendment concerns car sharing services and proposes on-demand deactivation of the knee-level airbag. The company argues that knee airbags are incompatible with specialized manual car controls used by people with limited mobility. Accidents often cause such airbags to inflate and ram the controls straight into the body of the driver, causing injury.
The other proposal is to enable retrofitting larger cars with dedicated platforms for wheelchairs and motorized rollers.
In other news, NHTSA has recently released yet another social ad video dedicated to driving under influence – you can watch it right here.
