Uber has initiated its first autonomous ride-hailing service in the United Kingdom, deploying self-driving vehicles on London's roadways in collaboration with British autonomous driving specialist Wayve. Over 140,000 London residents have already opted into the autonomous ride-matching program, indicating significant public interest in the new transportation option.
Passengers requesting UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort services may now be assigned a Wayve-equipped Ford Mustang Mach-E. There is no additional charge for this service, and users retain the option to decline an autonomous vehicle if they prefer a human-driven ride. During this initial phase, each autonomous vehicle will be accompanied by a trained, Transport for London-licensed private hire driver for safety oversight.
Wayve's AV2.0 system, which powers these vehicles, utilizes an AI Driver trained through extensive real-world experience rather than relying on conventional high-definition maps or pre-programmed instructions. This approach allows the vehicles to operate across most of London, excluding airport zones, offering a broader operational scope than some other autonomous services globally. Wayve has been developing and testing this technology on London's roads since 2018, accumulating a comprehensive dataset of diverse traffic scenarios.
Currently, the fleet comprises 15 Wayve Mustang Mach-E vehicles, a small fraction compared to London's approximately 100,000 Uber vehicles. This partnership is slated for expansion across 12 international markets, with AI-driven Nissan Leafs anticipated for deployment in Tokyo later this year. Uber projects that autonomous ride services will be operational on its platform in up to 15 cities by the close of 2026.
