VTT Marti combats winter with robot powers

The Finland-based science and research center VTT has recently completed its project for a self-driving car that can brave bad road conditions in wintertime.

The concept car was developed based on Volkswagen Touareg and named Martti. Scientists and engineers pretty much buried the entire vehicle under numerous antennae, sensors, cameras and, even lasers – every last one deemed strictly necessary for autonomous driving in adverse weather and road conditions.

The published video shows the car successfully running along a completely snowed-under road with no lane markings visible altogether. Granted, it’s only making forty kilometers per hour (twenty-five mph if you prefer), but the developer claims it’s just a provisional safety measure and not by far the actual speed limit.

In addition to the above, Martti comes with a road traffic data sharing system which enables it to trade real-time information with other cars and road infrastructure that support it.
