While its master brand, Honda, expects to have only 40% of its sales to fall on EVs by the beginning of the next decade, Acura targets 50% - and none of it part-electric.
This is what Emile Korkor, one of the brand executives, told Automotive News in an interview. He pointed out that the brand was moving even faster towards full electrification than Honda in terms of percentage of electric cars sold versus all cars.
Acura intends to build its first EV on third-party platforms. For example, it announced a new crossover SUV in June this year that would utilize the Ultium platform by General Motors. As such, it will be closely related to the Cadillac Lyriq featured in the gallery and the video here. At first, the vehicle will debut under the name ‘Honda Prologue’, and Acura will follow up later with a premium take on it.
The carmaker believes that it will be able to sell 30,000 premium vehicles in the United States per year, while Honda thinks it can move 70,000 Prologue SUVs per year. The Acura variant of the off-roader will put a stronger emphasis on its core values of performance and handling.
