Acura has revealed a tuned-up copy of its MDX SUV that it intends to use in the upcoming Pikes Peak International Hill Climb race in Colorado, USA.
The car had its stock 3.0-liter V6 engine replaced by a more modern version, which in turn had its displacement volume expanded from 3.5 to 3.7 liters. Acura then added three electric motors to the powertrain, mounting one on the front axle and two on the rear axle. The resulting hybrid outputs 405 hp (302 kW) along with 475 Nm (350 lb×ft) of torque to the wheels by means of a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
To be admitted to the race, this particular Acura MDX also gained a full-sized roll cage, a racing suspension upgrade, and a minimalistic cabin trim with the driver’s bucket seat being the only one.
An all-electric Acura SH-AWD EV managed to win the bronze in the overall standings of the 2016 Pikes Peak race. The sporty coupe came to the start line boasting a quartet of electric engines jointly rated at 1,000 hp (745 kW) and 800 Nm (627 lb×ft) of torque, enabling it to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.5 seconds.
