These latest spy pics show what looks suspiciously like a performance-oriented version of the Acura MDX crossover SUV. Let us consider our options for a moment and speculate on what it actually is.
Not too long ago, Acura revealed the next generation of its TLX sedan/saloon line, which moved over to a different technical platform and received new engines, as well as a high-end modification called Type S. The TLX model has traditionally shared its platform with the MDX, so it shouldn’t come as surprising to see the latter updated as well.
The test vehicle wears a thick wrap, but what little can be seen is fairly intriguing. For one, the prototype seems to have an exhaust system identical or similar to that of the TLX Type S. This prompts the suggestion that it, too, might receive a high-performance spec.
If this is the case, then in all likelihood the MDX Type S will ship with the same engine as the sedan. Since the latter hasn’t been launched yet, the details remain speculative, but most agree that it will be a three-liter twin-turbo V6 rated close to 400 hp (300 kW) and 500 Nm (370 lb-ft) of torque.
As we reported earlier today, a confidential image showing Acura’s USA roadmap until 2022 has recently leaked online. According to it, the performance SUV should emerge in two years’ time along with another Type S sedan series. This new model might phase out the outdated Acura ILX and become the more affordable alternative to the current-gen TLX.
