Acura starts testing the ZDX, its first electric SUV

Acura has posted some photos of a ZDX SUV prototype running its first road tests in a fancy wrap. The car depicted is a Type S version packing more performance than the standard modification.

You may know the Acura ZDX as a car that was originally produced in Canada for the North American market in 2009–2013. The new model has very little in common with it, though. Acura has confirmed that it was designed in its South California Design HQ based on the Precision EV Concept unveiled in August this year (watch the video for a reminder).

In terms of tech, the new ZDX will be a premium alternative to the Honda Prologue, both of which are co-designed with General Motors on the Ultium platform. The production may also take place at a GM factory somewhere in the USA. The premiere is expected to take place next year, but the sales will probably have to wait until 2024.

By the mid-2020s, the Japanese premium car brand plans to build a battery plant in the USA together with LG. The industrial complex, which cost its investors $4.4 billion, is expected to churn out up to 40 gigawatt-hours’ worth of batteries every year. The main focus will be on producing lithium-ion battery packs.

In 2026, the first electric cars designed by Honda and Acura on their proprietary platform known as e:Architecture are slated to debut. A year later, the conglomerate plans to introduce its second platform co-developed with General Motors. It will be optimal for making affordable EVs, which Acura plans to sell in both Americas and in China.
