In an earlier news, we reported about Sotheby’s Auctions’ intention to sell three vintage Alfa Romeo prototypes – the B.A.T. 5, 7 and 9 – as a single lot. Surprisingly enough, they found a buyer who paid a record-breaking U.S. $14,840,000 for them.
The amount marks the marque’s highest point as far as post-WWII vehicle sales go. If you are wondering what could possibly justify the price, consider that the cars weren’t positioned or sold as cars, but rather as pure works of art.
Custom car maker Bertone built the trio back in the 1950s based on the Alfa Romeo 1900 chassis. The main goal was to reach the absolute minimum in aerodynamic drag ratio, something that the company succeeded greatly at with the B.A.T. 9 having a record-low ratio of 0.19.
