The renowned Italian car company Alfa Romeo has lately officially confirmed it had been working on a new full-sized crossover car.
The vehicle should introduce the company to the electric car market. It is most likely to face competition from the latest Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes GLE, and Volvo XC90 at the time it is released.
According to an official media release, Alfa Romeo designers are currently working on the exterior of the new car which is going to be “among the largest mass-produced light motor vehicles in the world” and the largest Alfa Romeo car produced to date.
It is further revealed that the new Alfa Romeo SUV is being developed on the modified platform currently in use by the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the Alfa Romeo Giulia. Reusing an existing platform enables the company to save a lot of money and make the resulting car cheaper for the end customers.
Interestingly, most car experts don’t expect the vehicle to be fully electric or even hybrid. A much more likely scenario is the so-called “soft hybrid”, a configuration where an electric motor improves the overall performance of the gasoline engine but isn’t powerful enough to drive the car independently. If this is the case, then the new Alfa Romeo SUV may get a two-liter V4 turbo and a 48V E-motor summing up to around 400 horsepower.
