Alfa Romeo going after BMW with big SUVs and sedans

Alfa Romeo plans to expand its range by introducing new, larger models, CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato said in an interview to Autoweek. He opined that full-size sedans and crossovers would let it compete against BMW.

Among other things, Imparato mentioned the BMW X5 and X6, apparently hoping to introduce a couple of SUVs larger than the current Stelvio to hold their own against the Bavarians.

He also hinted at a sedan that would slot in above the Giulia and compete with the BMW 7-Series despite its emphasis on sportiness, rather than executive car values.

Aston Martin leadership believes this market segment to be the most lucrative right now, and envisions the company’s future as an international premium carmaker and part of Stellantis. Expanding the offer to include a few full-size vehicles should enable it to invade the market of China as well, which is the world’s largest at the time.

Sales will not begin until five years or so into the future. Alfa Romeo had said before that it intended to go all-electric by the end of the decade, so we would not be surprised to see these new models debut as EVs straight away.
