The Italian sport vehicle manufacturer Alfa Romeo has disclosed its plans for the future development of the brand until 2022 at the annual conference held by FCA Italy.
Apparently, the company expects to bring out a total of 7 new and updated models by 2022, thus raising the annual sales to 400,000 vehicles per year.
Another important news is that Giulia and Stelvio will both be re-released in LWB (long wheelbase) versions. After conducting some market research, the company has found that LWB vehicles occupied 80 percent of the luxury sedan niche. This may largely be attributed to their growing popularity on the market in China. Therefore, it could be argued that Alfa Romeo wants to target Chinese customers with its new Giulia LWB and Stelvio LWB.
All in all, Alfa Romeo plans to issue four brand-new models and three updates in its C, D, E, and S series until 2022. All of these are going to get plug-in hybrid drivetrains with a maximum of 50 km (31 mi) all-electric driving range.
Alfa Romeo is going to have to discontinue some of its less popular models to successfully incorporate the new releases in the lineup. In essence, this heralds the end of the somewhat lackluster MiTo supermini. The production capacities thus freed will come in handy when the company proceeds with the assembly of the long-anticipated 600+ hp / 450+ kW strong GTV sports coupe and the 700 hp / 522 kW strong 8C supercar.
