The Italian sports car maker will drop its Giorgio architecture in favor of a new automotive platform named “STLA large”. The statement stems from Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato.
The company has been using Giorgio since 2015, basing such popular models as the Giulia and the Stelvio on it. The same underpinnings cab even be found in the fifth-gen Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Maserati Grecale coming to the market soon.
However, even though the current architecture is considered efficient overall, it struggles hard when it comes to electrification – and this is the main reason for the automaker to switch to STLA large.
The next-gen Giulia and Stelvio should be the first models to make the transition, but the company does not even have approximate launch times for either. As such, it looks like the wait is going to take a while.
