Driven: Alfa Romeo Spider EV by Electric Classic Cars

Electric conversions of classic cars keep gaining popularity worldwide, even as the conservatively minded crowd keeps bashing them for lack of authenticity. A recent 13-minute video explores the nuances of the all-electric Alfa Romeo Spider.

Electric Classic Cars, which carried out the conversion, used a NetGain HyPer 9 motor mated to the wheels through a driveshaft and a reduction unit. This means there is no gearbox involved, but the drive is not direct, either. Power-wise, the tuner says the car comes close to the original’s 126 PS (124 hp / 93 kW) and 166 Nm (122 lb-ft) of torque.

Energy for the powertrain comes from a Tesla Model S battery pack divided into seven units and placed in various locations throughout the car for an optimal weight distribution. A full charge will get you about as far as 200 km (120 miles). On the upside, the company claims the restomod weighs nearly the same as the gas-powered original.

But what about the handling and the character? Here is where things get controversial. On the one hand, the reviewer finds driving the EV extremely easy and intuitive, saying you can truly relax behind the wheel of this car. On the other hand, sportiness is distinctly lacking and so is the Alfa Romeo spirit. To summarize, the Spider by ECC is an excellent ride in its own right, but not necessarily a good Alfa Romeo.
