1953 Alfa Romeo goes under the hammer

Car & Classics is selling a 70-year-old Alfa Romeo 1900 C Sprint Ghia Supergioiello. The sales will continue through the weekend, but the bidding has already reached €75,000. Only 20 such vehicles were made back in 1953, and only four are believed to have survived to this day.

The example on sale took part in the 1955 Monte Carlo Rally. It got into an accident six years later that had its front end completely destroyed. The restoration shop found it too challenging to rebuild the front to its original spec and ultimately opted for a different design.

The details of the three decades that followed are lost to history. The only thing we know is that the car was owned by Pablo Gemino, an automobile historian. He eventually sold it to a car collector from Portugal, who had it restored to near-factory form.
