Alfa Romeo to take the fight to BMW iX with an 800-km EV

Once the Italian carmaker completes the electrification of its current lineup, it will switch to working on a flagship SUV larger than the current Stelvio (see the gallery and the video) with up to 800 km (~500 miles) of range on a charge.

The corresponding statement was made by Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato himself. The company expects to begin international sales of the still-unnamed SUV in four years. Once out, it will take the competition to the BMW iX and the next Porsche Cayenne.

For the platform, the Stellantis Group company plans to use STLA Large, a premium architecture capable of 800V charging. This means owners will be able to replenish most of the battery charge in 30 minutes or so.

Imparato also says the new SUV will be loaded with state-of-the-art electronic features, including advanced self-driving and infotainment systems. However, it is not the technology that will be the main focus of the new car – as always, Alfa Romeo will prioritize driving enjoyment above all else. This is why it is already official that the powertrain will be configured to reproduce the classical rear-wheel drive feel.

USA and China will be the primary target markets. Alfa Romeo will offer the SUV in Europe as well, but admits the sales expectations aren’t high.
