Alfa Romeo Tonale is late to the party

The compact-sized Alfa Romeo Tonale crossover had been expected to debut in September 2021 and go on sale in Europe in November, but the company postponed it.

Apparently, company CEO Jean-Phillip Imparato did not like the parameters of the hybrid powertrain and sent it back for further improvement, which could take three months or more.

The Tonale comes based on the same Small Wide 4×4 platform as the Jeep Renegade and Compass. This makes it likely that the powertrains will also be the same. A 4xe hybrid system based on a 1.3-liter turbo can produce either 190 or 240 PS (187 – 237 hp; 140 – 176 kW) and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque. The Compass 4xe covers 49 kilometers (30 miles) on electric power, and it is reported that Imparato did not like the electric range in particular.

We expect the Tonale to look nearly the same as its two-year old concept version (in our gallery and the video). The company says the production will take place in Pomigliano d'Arco, Italy, but provides no new launch dates.
