Alfa Romeo Tonale video leaks ahead of premiere

Alfa Romeo has yet to show us the new Tonale SUV in its full glory, but in the meantime, a 5-minute video has leaked online detailing every aspect of the car.

The production-ready Tonale looks just like its concept version from three years ago except for slightly different proportions. It appears slightly longer that the prototype with longer overhangs at both ends. Precise numbers are pending, but you can get an idea if you consider that the car comes based on the same platform as the Jeep Compass.

Interior highlights include a three-spoke steering wheel, a rather detailed transmission tunnel with a modest-sized HVAC control panel, and two displays. The dash gauges look analog, rather than digital.

In its most affordable spec, the crossover SUV will represent a hybrid running on a 1.5-liter turbo and a 48V starter-generator. The combustion engine will be available in 130 and 160 PS (128 and 158 hp; 96 and 118 kW) variants. The electric motor will assist the main engine with 20 PS (20 hp / 15 kW) and 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) of torque of its own. A seven-speed DCT will carry the torque to the front wheels.

Those interested in all-wheel drive will need the plug-in hybrid spec rated at 275 PS (271 hp / 202 kW) thanks to an added rear axle motor. The transmission is six-speed automatic in this specification, and the traction battery is rated at 15.5 kilowatt-hours, which implies up to 80 m (50 miles) of all-electric range.

Some markets in Europe may get a few non-electrified variants of the Tonale. Details remain to be revealed, but we expect a 1.6-liter diesel good for 130 PS (128 hp / 96 kW) and a 2.0-liter gasoline turbo with 260 PS (256 hp / 191 kW).
