Alfa Romeo Tonale debuts at last

Alfa Romeo unveiled the Tonale Concept in 2019, promising to follow up with a production version soon. After two missed launch dates, the hybrid crossover SUV has finally hit the spotlight now.

The car will go on sale in Europe closer to the summer this year, while customers in the USA will have to wait until 2023. There will be a few part-electric versions to choose from, including two mild hybrids comprising a 1.5-liter four-cylinder and a single electric motor built into the transmission. The less powerful variant will produce 130 PS (128 hp / 96 kW) and the more powerful, 160 PS (158 hp / 118 kW). Both are front-wheel drive only.

Going for the top specification nets you a plug-in hybrid with a 1.3-liter turbo engine, an electric motor mounted on the rear axle, and a li-ion battery rated at 15.5 kWh. The combined output amounts to 275 PS (271 hp / 202 kW), and the all-electric range in city conditions to 80 km (50 miles).

Non-hybrid variants are also going to be available. There is a diesel spec with 130 PS (128 hp / 96 kW) and a petrol four-pot rated at 260 PS (256 hp / 191 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque.

An ensemble of digital displays is the biggest highlight in the cabin: the two screens appear to have at least 22 inches diagonal size between them (detailed specs pending). OTA updates and Alexa voice assistant are included in the base trim level.
