Drag Race: Watch a BMW E39 M5 go up against Alpina B10 V8 & B10 V8S

Alpina started off in 1965 as a tuning shop specializing in BMW cars. In early 2000s, it introduced the B10 V8 and the particularly powerful B10 V8S based on the E39 5-Series. In the latest video by Carwow, an E39 M5 tries to outpace both tuned cars.

Before you watch, note that the BMW M5 is by no means a slouch itself. It packs a 4.9-liter non-turbo V8 rated at 400 PS (394 hp / 294 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque straight from the factory. However, it is also the only contender in the race with manual transmission, putting it at a certain disadvantage. Making things worth is the fact that it is the heaviest of the trio with 1,795 kilos (3,957 pounds) of curb weight.

The Alpina B10 V8S makes do with a slightly smaller engine – a 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V8 good for 380 PS (375 hp / 279 kW) and 510 Nm (376 lb-ft) of torque. A five-speed automatic gearbox conveys the momentum to the rear wheels. It tips the scales at 1,690 kilos (3,725 pounds).

The Alpina B10 is the lightest of the trio and uses a 4.6-liter V8 tuned to 340 PS (335 hp / 250 kW) and 470 Nm (347 lb-ft). The transmission is also five-speed automatic.
