Unofficial: Alpine to design a battery sports car on proprietary tech

Alpine could be underway to producing a high-end electric vehicle on a platform it has yet to design, Renault CEO Luca de Meo hinted in a recent interview.

He said that Alpine had intended to develop its own technological architecture specifically for electric cars. Once completed, it will provide the basis for a successor model to the current Alpine A110. Considering the high R&D costs, the company will have to come up with a sufficiently versatile design viable for releasing multiple new models. If it does succeed in designing such a platform, it will be only a matter of time until a sporty EV is released based on it.

In late May, Alpine broke up its over-a-year-long partnership with Lotus that envisioned designing one common car platform to be used by multiple Alpine and Lotus models in the future. No comment was provided on the partnership termination.

Do Meo’s words could be interpreted as an indication that a new sports car was underway to the Alpine lineup in the near future – one that is more powerful, prestigious and expensive than the A110. He denied any further comment, but promised to reveal more during the Investor Day event scheduled on next Monday, June 26.
