YouTube channel Frame has posted a video reporting straight from the facility where the Aston Martin DBX, positioned as the world’s most powerful premium SUV by its manufacturer, is made. The vid details all production stages from assembly to finishing, including stages where manual work is required.
At first, the body gets assembled from individual panels. Qualified personnel polishes and primes the metal sheets, but the painting itself is carried out by robotic arms.
A parallel conveyor belt is churning out the drivetrains – engines, transmissions and all-wheel-drive systems. Once a chassis with the drivetrain is complete, it is carried to the next area where it receives its exhaust and suspension parts. The exhaust system gets wrapped in heat-insulating material for added safety.
More manual work is involved in making seats. The factory employees assembly seat bases, but the filler (seat padding) in and spread it evenly, and route the heating/ventilation as needed. All embroidery and embossing is done automatically, though, with Aston Martin arguing that it’s both faster and more reliable than handiwork.
The DBX SUV went on sale three years ago. Its 4.0-liter Mercedes-AMG engine was originally rated at 550 PS (542 hp / 404 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. In early 2022, a flagship spec named DBD707 was introduced with 707 PS (697 hp / 520 kW) under the hood and a top speed of 310 km/h (192 mph). In the near future, the company plans to unveil a facelift version with a more up-to-date cabin.
