Aston Martin and Britishvolt team up on high-end battery R&D

The British sports car maker and tech company will unite efforts to design high-performance traction batteries for hybrid and all-electric production vehicles.

The factory will be situated in Britain, although its precise location remains to be agreed upon. Britishvolt is getting its own “Gigafactory” ready to churn out new batteries for up to 450,000 EVs per year. It will not open until five years later, though.

Britishvolt has recently received funding equivalent to $2.3 billion USD from the UK government and another $54 million from a cobalt mining enterprise. It still needs $264 million to build the factory and a research lab.

Aside from Aston Martin, the battery producer signed similar contracts with three other automakers. One of these is Lotus, while the other two remain undisclosed.

Aston Martin intends to launch the production of its first hybrid supercar – the Valhalla featured in the gallery and video here – in 2024. A full-fledged EV is set to follow a year after that, and the last non-electrified Aston Martin is destined to become history in 2026. A full transition to electric power is expected in 2030.
