Lucid to supply Aston Martin with electric motors

Aston Martin has reported reaching an agreement with U.S.-based EV startup Lucid according to which the latter will supply its motors to the British automaker. Mercedes-Benz will remain the main supplier of internal combustion engines.

Along with the announcement, the company released a teaser of its Valhalla superhybrid due out in 2024.

As a result of the new partnership, Aston Martin will now focus its efforts on designing a new electric sports car platform that will accommodate Lucid powertrains and batteries. Mercedes-Benz will provide the underlying architecture and the software.

Starting from 2025, all Aston Martin cars will be produced on this new platform. That year will also mark the release of the British company’s first fully electric vehicle. We still don’t know which one it will be, but Aston Martin considers releasing crossover SUVs, grand tourers and hypercars on its innovative EV chassis.

The contract with Lucid is worth over $450 million, the company reports. It is still a small fraction of the $2.5+ billion it is planning to invest into the total electrification of its lineup over the next five years.

As for the titular teaser pic showing the outlines of a supercar, it comes without any accompanying text or any other details.
