Reports: Aston Martin discards the idea of a mid-engined Vanquish

According to Car&Driver quoting sources inside Aston Martin, the British automaker no longer intends to produce a special version of its Vanquish supercar with the engine located within the wheelbase.

The original concept car debuted at the GIMS-2019 (see the gallery and he video), and the company was confident about its production prospects back then. It even went as far as to name the main competitors – the Ferrari F8 Tributo and the McLaren 720S. If the supercar were to debut today, we would imagine it to compete against the Ferrari 296 GTB as well. Not only that, but Aston Martin positioned it as its most affordable mid-engine sports car in the lineup.

The Geneva show prototype had a hybrid powertrain based on a turbocharged V6 designed in the house. Later on, reports emerged that the company was no longer considering the V6 – its usual 4.0-liter Mercedes-AMG V8 was allegedly cheaper to use. The electric motor setup was also expected to be borrowed from Mercedes. The combined output was estimated at 800 horsepower (600 kilowatts) or higher.

However, the new reports Car&Driver received this week point to the British company abandoning the mid-engined Vanquish project. It could be canceled completely or postponed indefinitely; either way, it sounds like we won’t be seeing the car in production anytime soon.
