The S versions of the Audi A6/A7 now available with diesel engines

Up until now, you could only purchase an Audi S6 or S7 with a gasoline engine – but not anymore. The next generation comes with new diesel options to choose from in Europe.

The new ‘S’ versions of the Audi A6/A7 are now technically uniform with the SQ5 TDI SUV. Both models come equipped with a 3.0-liter, V-shaped, six-cylinder TDI engine assisted by a turbocharger, an electric supercharger, AND a 7-kilowatt electric motor. The powertrain also includes a 48V circuit and a 10,000 mAh battery.

Both cars produce up to 349 hp (260 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lbft) of torque. The electric-powered supercharger only assists the turbocharger until the engine hits 1,650 RPM, and the maximum torque is exerted between 2,500 and 3,100 RPM.

All S models take advantage of a starter-generator unit that improves initial acceleration and helps quickly restart the engine once the electronics shuts it down during freewheeling or braking.

The S6 sedan/saloon manages to hit 100 km/h from standstill in 5 seconds flat, while the S6 Avant estate/wagon and the S7 Sportback manage the same in 5.1 seconds. All are capped at 250 km/h (155 mph).

The new diesel engine links to a permanent AWD system and an 8-speed automatic transmission. All cars ship with such standard features as rear wheel steering, roll/sway stabilization that you may turn off completely, adaptive shock absorbers, and lower ground clearance (S6: -20 mm / -0.8 inches; S7: -10 mm / -0.4 inches). Options include air suspension, carbon-ceramic brake, and active rear differential.

On the outside, the new S series sports aggressively styled bumpers, wider fenders, silvery side mirror caps, and quad exhaust tips.

Looking inside the cabin, there is a digital dashboard, new seats, and four-zone climate control. You may pay extra to get a sports steering wheel and other sporty features.

Audi will begin shipping the diesel-powered S6/S7 in the summer of 2019. Prices start at €76,500 for the sedan/saloon, €79,000 for the estate/wagon, and €82,750 for the liftback.
