Audi announces the AI:Trail quattro, schedules Frankfurt reveal

Audi will be coming to the IAA Frankfurt show in September with an all-electric SUV concept called the AI:Trail quattro.

The vehicle will join the family of Audi’s latest design studies, which currently includes the 2017 Aicon Concept (354 hp / 264 kW), the 2018 PB 18 e-tron (680 hp / 507 kW), and the 2019 AI:ME urban hatchback (170 hp / 127 kW). The manufacturer’s exhibition booth at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show will have all four vehicles on display.

The concept car most likely packs a standard Audi traction battery rated at 62 or 65 kWh. That said, the technically similar Audi Q4 e-tron and Volkswagen ID. Crozz both have larger batteries (estimated at 82-83 kWh), so it might as well follow their example.

It is official that the AI:Trail quattro sports two electric engines: one on the front axle with 100 hp / 75 kW, the other on the rear one with 200 hp / 150 kW.

The SUV takes advantage of a modern architecture called the MEB, which allows for excellent technical flexibility. For instance, the Volkswagen ID. Buggy, which was also based on the MEB platform, had a rear-wheel drive, but could be easily upgraded with a front-axle engine when needed.
