Audi considers ditching A1 in favor of an EV

Audi CEO Markus Duesmann admitted that the marque’s ambitious drive towards electrification makes it question the viability of continuing the A1 line. A small electric vehicle may be a better fit in the modern day and age.

Duesmann pointed out that the compact car segment was rather overcrowded as is with such prominent entries as the Seat Ibiza, Skoda Fabia, and Volkswagen Polo. Making an ICE car and then electrifying it post-launch would not be viable at all.

With the A1 apparently ditched, the Q2 crossover SUV will remain Audi’s most affordable car in range. Having said that, the Ingolstadt automaker still has plans to launch a comparatively affordable EV in the future, possibly one based on the AI:ME Concept shown here in the attached video.

Aside from this, Audi will be culling its ICE lineup soon, removing any models that can cannibalize sales of current or upcoming EVs.
