Audi A3 gets two hybrid powertrains

After facelifting its A3 lineup this spring, Audi has now released a couple of new engine options for it. They will go on sale before the end of the month starting from €44,200.

Both are plug-in hybrids based on a 1.5-liter TFSI evo2 engine and an electric motor built into a six-speed DCT. The new engine replaces the old 1.4-liter option in the lineup and benefits from higher compression ratios and injection pressures. The e-motor makes 116 PS (114 hp / 87 kW).

The combined output depends on the model. The 40 TFSI e produces 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque, sprinting 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and hitting its limit at 225 km/h (140 mph). The 45 TFSI e enjoys 272 PS (268 hp / 200 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), allowing it to reach 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and eventually hit 237 km/h (147 mph). The flagship also gets sporty trim details and unique interior accents.

Compared to the old hybrid range, the new one uses a battery pack almost twice as big. Storing 25.7 kilowatt-hours at max capacity, it can grant up to 143 km (89 miles) of electric range to both models. The speed in this mode will stay capped at 140 km/h (87 mph).

Later this fall, Audi plans to introduce a soft-roading version of the A3 called “allstreet”. It will also be hybrid, but the specifics are still pending.
