Reports: Audi working on a hybrid and an all-electric A4

We have no next-gen Audi A4 spy shots to show you at the time, but here is what Autocar has to report about its powertrain options.

According to the magazine, the next RS4 Avant wagon will be a plug-in hybrid based on a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6, an electric motor, and a battery rated for 100 kilometers (62 miles) of electric range. The output should exceed the current generation’s 450 PS (444 hp / 331 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque.

In addition to this, Audi will reportedly be offering an all-electric A4 E-Tron Liftback. The model will be based on the PPE chassis of the A6 E-Tron and have an RS modification. Its dual-motor powertrain might exceed 469 PS (463 hp / 345 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque.

The new generation should keep its traditional petrol and diesel engines as well, at least those compliant with the Euro-7 standard. The manual transmission will retire in favor of a seven- or eight-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The premiere is expected next year.
