Volkswagen Group is planning to expand its market influence in China by establishing another joint enterprise there that will produce a new long-wheelbase version of the Audi A7 Sportback.
VW Group has been cooperating with Chinese manufacturers since late last century, producing the majority of Volkswagen and Skoda-branded vehicles in the VW-SAIC joint enterprise. It appears that Audi will be joining the list soon.
The company intends to invest over $500M into the development of the next-gen Audi A7 Sportback LWB. This isn’t unprecedented, however, as many automotive companies stretch their cars quite a bit to accommodate the wishes of customers in China.
The production start is penciled in for 2022, and VW Group plans to churn out 60,000 annual units.
