Remnants of the ICE Age: Audi e-tron pretends to be gas-powered sometimes

Since its launch in 2018, the Audi e-tron SUV has firmly taken up the position of the marque’s best-selling electric vehicle. Despite this, sometimes it seems to forget itself, acting just like an old car powered by an internal combustion engine.

Georg Konjovic‏, from Munich, Germany, was one of the first in his country to grab an e-tron when it came out. Recently, he has posted a funny image on his social media page showing a ‘change oil’ warning on the dashboard. Some EVs actually need their reduction gear oil changed from time to time, but not the e-tron. Furthermore, Audi’s e-SUV needs much less maintenance than any diesel or gas-powered vehicle overall. For one, it relies on regenerative braking for most of its deceleration needs, thus prolonging the life of brake discs and brake pads.

The reason for the message is likely that the electric SUV comes based on the MLB Evo platform originally developed for ICE-powered cars. The software is also shared among models.

Audi said that it was aware of the issue, and added that it only occurred in the SUVs assembled within the first six weeks of production. A simple software update should take care of the problem.
