This Quattro is 37 years old and extensively modified for hill climb racing, which should warrant it a price between £225,000 and £250,000 at an upcoming auction, experts believe.
Back in the time, rally driver Keith Edwards bought the Audi new and had planned to daily it, but it did not last long. He soon decided to try his luck at hill climb racing, starting with local events and small-time upgrades. Year after year, he kept adding new parts to the car until he had to face the truth that it was no longer suitable for roads.
A while later, he got an invitation to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, perhaps the world’s most famous racing event of this genre. He once again repurposed the car completely, leaving only the doors and the roof stock. The body lost 320 mm (12.5 inches) of length and a whole load of weight. However, despite his best effort, he never scored a victory at the Pikes Peak.
The car on sale comes powered by a 2.3-liter inline five-cylinder engine with 20 valves, which sends over 800 PS (789 hp / 588 kW) to the wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox. 16-inch magnesium-alloy wheels wear Avon slicks, and the brakes, suspension and steering are all upgraded.
