Audi Sport is considering releasing a road-legal version of the R8 racecar. The vehicle will get a number of distinguishing design features along with numerous mechanical tweaks.
According to Audi Sport CTO Oliver Hoffmann, most customers would prefer a ‘civilian’ variant of the R8 LMS GT3, which just won the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring. Since the racecar comes equipped with the same basic engine as the road-going R8, the conversion shouldn’t prove too much of a challenge.
On the other hand, those of us who would like to see an electrified R8 should probably not get their hopes high just yet. Audi Sport admits it has no intention to integrate its 5.2-liter V10 mill into a hybrid powertrain of any kind. Instead, the company will take the regular GT3 and rework its chassis and suspension for daily road use.
The current-gen R8 has been around since 2015, going through a facelift in 2018. Audi has officially announced that the next generation will be purely electric.
