Audi talks about the new R8

Oliver Hoffmann, head of Audi Sport, has revealed a few bits of information concerning the next generation of its R8 supercar. According to him, the company will make every effort to continue offering the series with its trademark naturally aspirated V10 engine, despite the increasingly strict environmental standards.

He stressed that the V10 had long been viewed upon as the symbol of the R8 series, something that made the supercar stand out among its peers. However, the latest environmental laws necessitate making major changes to its configuration. To overcome the odds, the company might eventually opt for a hybrid powertrain.

An earlier media rumor stated that Audi was considering switching the next-gen Audi R8 to electric power completely over environmental concerns. We will not know just whether this is actually the case until much closer to the premiere, though, which Audi pencils in for 2022.

The German marque unveiled the latest R8 facelift in the fall of 2018. The series mostly gained engine and suspension improvements. Specifically, the 2018 Audi R8 facelift ships with a 570 hp (425 kW) and 550 Nm (406 lb×ft) of torque in base configuration. In turn, the top trim brings 610 hp (455 kW) and 580 Nm (428 lb×ft) of torque to the table, accelerating from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.1 seconds. It maxes out at an impressive 329 km/h (204 mph).
