Most buyers of mid-engined sports cars like the Audi R8 expect to see eight or ten gas-powered cylinders under the hood – and that’s what they get from Audi, too. Darkside Developments still felt a diesel would not be amiss.
The tuner is known for converting German cars to heavy oil fuel, but has never tackled an R8 in this regard before. Even more interestingly, Audi itself intended to produce a diesel-V12-powered R8 to celebrate a 24 Hours of Le Mans victory a while ago. Everyone quickly forgot those plans when the Dieselgate broke out, and the limited edition never came to be.
This makes the Darkside Developments project one of a kind. The tuner says it will have to find a reliable enough transmission to handle all the surplus torque, because the stock one just isn’t up to the task.
However, before the project can begin, DD wants users to decide whether a V6 or V8 would be the better fit for the R8. So far, the V8 seems to stay confidently in the lead in the YouTube comments for the video.
And what do you think?
