Audi confirms that the R8 successor will be all-electric

Rumors that Audi will replace the R8 with an electric car have been circulating for a while now, but the company has just confirmed though on official terms.

Linda Kurz, Chief Marketing Officer of the brand, has confirmed in an interview with Roadshow that the R family of performance cars will undergo a major transformation soon.

The latest-gen R8 coupe has been around since 2015, with a roadster version joining it a year later. Both had a facelift not long ago. The company actually did produce an electric R8 some time ago: called the R8 e-tron, it offered 462 PS (456 hp / 340 kW) and came out in a limited series of just 100 cars priced at $1,000,000 each. The range maxed out at 450 km (280 miles).

It is obvious that the new R8 EV will be much more affordable and capable than the early prototype mentioned above, but Audi remains tight-lipped about any details. For all we know, it might debut in a different body style, not just under a different name. No launch timeframes have been revealed yet.
