Prior to converting the R8 to electric power, Audi will be releasing a new special edition of the car, Audi Sport Managing Director Sebastian Grams said in an interview to Top Gear.
He emphasized that the potential of the R8 had not been fully tapped yet and that the developing team had certain ideas where to take it next. He did not answer when the ICE supercar would finally stop being available, though.
Grams hinted that the final edition might be rear-wheel-driven for a sportier, more driver-oriented feel. Ditching heavy quattro internals would also make it 65 kg (143 lbs) lighter. It remains to be seen whether the 5.2-liter V10 will be boosted or left at its usual 620 PS (611 hp / 456 kW), but an upgrade in this department would be both logical and welcome, indeed.
Aside from the R8, Audi is planning to electrify its entire RS range of vehicles, aiming for 80% electrified by late 2026.
