The Audi RS 6 GTO is a crazy two-seater wagon with vintage looks

The legendary Ferrari 250 GTO was not the only vehicle in history to flaunt the Gran Turismo Omologata, some other examples including the Mitsubishi GTO, the Pontiac GTO and a 720-hp racecar from 1989 called the Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO. Here’s a more modern take on the latter.

Created by a team interns directed by Head of Audi Design Marc Lichte, the one-off wagon uses the RS 6 chassis and celebrates 40 years of the Quattro AWD. The intention was to imitate the Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO with the livery, side pipes and hub caps. OEM front seats made way for bucket seats outfitted with multi-point harnesses, and a roll cage was installed in place of the rear row.

When the Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO came out, it packed a 2.2-liter turbocharged engine paired with a six-speed transmission that accelerated it to 305 km/h (189.5 miles per hour). It only participated in the IMSA GT racing series in the year 1989, having arrived two stages late. It proceeded to score seven victories that season, but never claimed the top prize.
