Video: Audi RS6 Avant is a superwagon, but is it a supercar?

The Audi RS6 (C8) Avant is the kind of family hauler that can take you to a kindergarten and back home with kids faster than your significant other can ask you about it, but does it hold its own on the racetrack as well? MTM did some testing with its 1,015-PS copy.

The stock RS6 Avant uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 to hit the wheels with 600 PS (592 hp / 441 kW) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque. MTM dials it up to 1,015 PS (1,001 hp / 746 kW) and 1,250 Nm (921 lb-ft). Sprint time drops down from 3.6 seconds to just 2.9, the second hundred is reached in 8.6 seconds, and the top speed goes from 305 to over 350 km/h (190 – 217+ mph).

But racing in a straight line just isn’t the same as driving a bulky estate car on a racing circuit. MTM entrusted SportAuto to test it out at the Hockenheimring, and the resulting lap time was 1:53.4. This is better than even the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 and the Taycan Turbo can do, let alone the BMW M5 Competition, Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, and Audi R8 V10 Spyder Performance.

However, dedicated supercars still pulled considerably ahead of the RS3 despite their significantly lower paper specs. For one, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S managed the lap in 1:52.8. The Porsche 991.2 Turbo S completed the race in 1:50, and the new McLaren 765LT reigned supreme with 1:46.2.
