China-based automotive corporation BAIC has unveiled a new SUV named Stone 01, which you don’t need to be a car expert to recognize as an, ahem, informal replica of the new Land Rover Defender. Carscoops believes it will enter production before the end of 2023.
The off-roader is 5,050 mm long, 1,869 mm wide and 1,980 mm tall with 3,010 mm between the axles. Its stretched version is 5,295 mm long and sits between the Defender 110 and 130 in terms of size.
Similarities with the iconic British SUV do not end there. The proportions are virtually the same, as are the side profile, the wheel arches and even the door handles. The roof and the pillars are offset in black for contrast.
The interior remains to be revealed, but we know that there will be six- and seven-seat variants on sale.
Powertrain-wise, the Stone 01 will utilize two electric motors rated one at 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) and the other at 272 PS (268 hp / 200 kW). A 1.5-liter petrol turbo will contribute another 152 PS (150 hp / 112 kW), but not to the wheels – it will act as a power generator for the traction battery, which will be supplied by local vendor CATL.
