Baojun e100 facelift costs more, goes farther

The compact Chinese all-electric vehicle Baojun E100 has received a new, facelifted version. It now offers quite a bit more driving range, but comes with a suitably higher price tag.

The entry-level Baojun E100 now costs the equivalent of U.S. $7,000 in China, all reductions included. The previous model is available starting at $5,500. The top-spec vehicle now costs $9,300 and above.

The driving range is now 200 kilometers / 125 miles, as opposed to the 155 km / 95 mi in the original version. To compensate for the price bump, the company ships the car with a wall socket charger you can use for free until the end of 2017.

Underwhelming sales of the environment-friendly vehicle over the past year are definitely the main reason for the facelift. The negative trend goes on: only 5,300-something copies have been sold in Janury through April this year.

The small-sized Baojun E100 is only 2,497 mm (8.2 ft.) long, 1,526 mm (5 ft.) wide and 1,616 (5.3 ft.) mm tall, and weighs in at just 800 kg. The refreshed series still uses the old low-end electric motor with 39 hp / 29 kW and accelerates to a maximum of 100 km/h (62 mph).
