Bentley recalls thousands of Bentayga models over fire risk

A total of 3,527 Bentley Bentayga SUVs are being recalled for free repairs following the discovery of a defect in the fuel pump unit that could cause it to overheat and ultimately catch fire.

The issue was first reported a year and a half ago, with some owners saying they could smell gasoline in the cabin of the luxury SUV. It is only now that the defect has been officially confirmed.

The company found that fuel pump rotors can malfunction in hot weather or if running on subpar gas. The electronics of the Bentayga can get stuck trying to run a de-clog routine over and over again, causing an excessive strain on the wiring and raising its temperature. In a particularly rare and unlucky turn of events, this can culminate in a fire.

All SUVs being recalled will be retrofitted with new, sturdier and better insulated wires.
