Bentley replaces the old W12 with a superior hybrid powertrain

Bentley’s signature 6.0-liter W12 is finally facing retirement after two decades in production, and the company is replacing it with a state-of-the-art powertrain called Ultra Performance Hybrid. Rated above 760 PS (750 hp / 560 kW), it will be the marque’s most powerful to date.

The main engine will have eight cylinders, but the whole system will still surpass the W12 currently found in the range-topping Continental and GT Flying Spur models by at least 90 horsepower (67 kilowatts). For the limited-run Batur model, this engine alone will output 750 PS (740 hp / 552 kW) before any electric aid.

The torque remains to be revealed, but the company teases us saying it’s “in the four-digit” territory. Assuming at least 1,000 Newton-meters, that’s 738 pound-feet. or more.

Range-wise, the Ultra Performance Hybrid will be rated for up to 80 km (50 miles) of all-electric range. The caveat is that only the British brand’s high-end vehicles will be deigned worthy of it. Entry-level cars may wind up with a different powertrain altogether.

Bentley promises to reveal more details in the coming weeks.
