BMW working on affordable 1 Series EV

We have reported multiple times that BMW was planning to expand its electrified vehicle offer dramatically in the next few years. As it turns out, the company is already busy designing an all-electric five-door hatchback – its most affordable EV so far.

The car will be based on the latest 1 Series chassis (see the gallery and video) and will likely look identical to it, save for a different (fake) grille design and a brighter paint scheme.

The car – which goes by the provisional name of i1 – should see its market launch in 2021.

BMW continues switching its entire product range to electric power. The German automotive giant plans to release 12 BEVs and up to 15 HEVs over the coming four years. The crossover SUVs ix3 and iNext will be the first to debut, followed by the i4 sedan/saloon. The modular architecture BMW currently uses enables fitting almost any model with an electric engine.
